John Sweeney

Rev. John Sweeney has been active in fundraising in the non-profit space for over 20 years. His career path has included the American Red Cross, Make-A-Wish Foundation of Georgia and Alabama, the Arthritis Foundation, and Birmingham-Southern College. Currently, John serves as the Director of Stewardship Development at Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church.

John has a BS in History from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, and a Master of Divinity from Duke Divinity School, of Duke University. He has served on various committees and taskforces supporting the City of Vestavia Hills, where he and his wife, Mary Virginia, have lived since 2000. John and Mary Virginia have two children, James and Ella, and two adopted dogs, Gus and Frances.

John became involved with Wesley College after spending a few days learning of the work of Eric Soard and his family in Tanzania. Having served in fundraising roles in higher education, John knows the vital role that foundations play in the support of education throughout the world.
